Do you like sweaty women?

posted Wednesday, 25 November 2009

When I told a friend that I'm going to Moscow to teach a master class on programming with Adobe Flex , he said that I was crazy. Normal people don't go to Russia in December.  This reminded me an old Russian joke:

A boss asks an engineer, "Do you like sweaty women and warm vodka?"

"No, both are disgusting!"

"OK, then I'll schedule your next vacation in winter"

I'll be going there next week and, guess what, the Delta plane I'll be on has electric outlets! On a 11-hour flight this is called happiness!

Hi, budam. You're so elusive, that i couldn't find any e-mail to write you to. So i'll place a little feedback-story here.

You were totally right. No one should ever speak about money they earn, especially talking with friends. It happened so that i always wanted to be a big man, so i worked hard. I worked full-time, when i came home i worked as a freelance, or read computer science books, or whatched educational videos. And i was tired every minute of my life. But i knew, that i have a goal. I didnt even wanted sex with my wife for weeks. I was earning N$ per month. A friend of mine wasn't that concerned about carreer and played games during the full-time job. Sitting no more than 40 hours a week in an office. And a week ago he got promoted, and he said:"hey, look. i'm promoted, i'm earning 1,5 times more than you'. That was terrible. I felt like a log hitted my face. I was a boxer that's knocked out. I couldn't work for a day or two. I was thinking that the world is fucking unfair. And i hated that friend of mine. Not because he's more rich now. Because he didn't deserve this. 6-7 years that i know him, he didnt ever try that hard as i did. I got over it, now i'm cool, but still feel a little uncomfortable. And i learned a lesson. Never-ever-ever talk about money with friends.

Yep, you've leraned it hard way. The less you know the better you sleep, especially when it comes to such sensitive information as someone's salary. The only thing you didn't get yet is that most likely, your friend does something better than you. From your perspective, he did nothing but played video games at work. But from his boss perspective, he did something useful for the business between the games. The other reason is that he has better communications skills than you and you might consider enrollment in some training in communication instead of JUST improving your technical skills.

Thank you for your reply. I think i know the answer to my own question 'Why?'. And the answer is, i do have to find a better job. In some places you get promoted every year or two. My mistake was working in a very small company, that don't have enough potential to pay me more. Even though i might have deserved. And i'm on the way to solve this problem.

One more rule to remember - ask yourself every time, what did you do wrong, what could have been done better. In most cases there is what could've been done better. And what you can do now to make it better.

Thank you very much for your last podcast episode. It's really close to me, i really wanted to break in a talk and say a lot of things. I'm 24 going to PhD in Russian University. In a childhood i was very-very poor. My father left us, my mother worked in a kindergarden to earn for food for me and my brother. We were poor even between other russian people. Sometimes I was called a bum in a school. Time have passed, and now i earn some money. And my mentality also changed. The same way as Andrey said about him. I've never hated rich people, i dislike people who didnt do a thing to be rich. Like the ones who have rich dads or moms and are showing off on TV. I respect people who earned their money.

And the problem of russian people is, they dont ask themselves that question i mentioned. They think everyone who is rich is a thief. And so they dont try at all, cause like 'it's no use'. And they're wrong. Everyone should fight for themselves.

Dear Yakov and Man-in-the-middle,

The above mentioned stories are happening every where in the world. "Life teach a lesson to lift your life upper". Any way all your hardwork(=Investment) will give "Returns" one day.
