JBuilder 2007 - they must be crazy

posted Tuesday, 28 November 2006

It looks like Borland could not find a buyer for their IDE division, and they've released a new Eclipse-based version of Java IDE - JBuilder 2007. They will TRY TO SELL different version of this product, and the Enterprise Edition costs $1999 (?!). They must be crazy.  For only two grand it offers  "velocity with Visual EJB and web services GUIs, provides balance, enabling management of complex projects across locations with P2P and TeamInsight, and gives organizations confidence to develop with open source tools and plug-ins". This is not even funny.

The only reason Joe Shmo, the  CIO of an enterprise Java shop might  purchase this product from Borlad is that Joe plays golf with one of the Borland Executives and wants to do him/her a favor.   I personally do not even have time to try it even if they'd given it to me for free.

Borland used to produce the best Java IDE several years ago. But the world is different now. Get real guys.

I don't get the pricing either.

Well, have you actually looked at the pricing? There is a free version coming, there is a version for a couple of hundred bucks, another one around the $700 mark I think, and then the big one.

if I read your comment about not having time to look at it even if they gave it to you for free correctly, you haven't actually seen it? I haven't seen it yet either, but it seems a bit irresponsible to dismiss it so publicly without being informed about it. Nice work.

Malcolm, I am comparing apples to apples - you can get Eclipse with WTP for free with great tools for enterprise development. Netbeans is also free. An excellent enterprise grade IDE IntelliJ IDEA cost $500. Unless JBuilder 2007 has voice activated enterprise development, it's plain stupid to charge $2000 for this product. If they look at another overpriced monster called WSAD, too bad. IBM is not in the software business anymore and can survive without selling WSAD, while for Borland it's the mainstream product.

As a reminder, this is my personal blog and I express my opinion here without thinking twice.

Unfortunately for Borland, the era in which they prospered has passed. Please exit gracefully...

Fair enough, but it seems difficult to compare apples to apples when you haven't seen this particular apple (ok, I know, I've stretched that metaphor too far). They MIGHT have voice activated enterprise development, or something else that makes you happy to pay the price. Dismissing something as too expensive without knowing the value it brings, is just as bad as all those people who used to dismiss Eclipse as a toy without having used it.

Look, they might be crazy, I don't know. But it just seems lightweight to dismiss it without at least looking at the features.

Sure, no problem. But equally, if you are going to publicly express an opinion, personal or otherwise, you shouldn't be surprised when someone questions you on it.

I am checking it out right now. It does come with together (uml roundtrip tool) and optimizeit profiler. two expensive tools.

I agree though, intellij is the best.

JBuilder 2007 plugin for eclipse is is now developed by CodeGear a subsidiary of Borland, the plugin comes with a bunch of other plugins that will be supported by Codegear. Some of these plugins include PMD, FindBugs, Maven 2 etc and they also incorporate opimizitit a profiling tool with the JBuilder plugin. While it is an expensive tool it does provide easy web service, Spring, Hibernate and Struts development. Currently, the only plugin that I can compare to JBuilder is MyEclipse and MyEclipse comes with an annual subscription of $30. I haven't used WTP so I can't comment on it.

The price is not that bad if you consider the fact that you get a full version of TogetherJ and OptimizeIt, each cost more than the $2000. Actually we already ordered TogetherJ when this offer came along... which was reason enough to cancel the order and order Jbuilder instead. so it was very nice timeing for us ;)

I was never a big Jbuilder fan, so moving to Eclipse was probably the best decision they ever made. We have used MyEclipse since it exists and it is OK, however I don't like how they modify some of the free plugins, this sometimes results in weird problems when using additional plugins. Lately we have been moving to WTP, which made MyEclipse kind of useless anyway. the UML in MyEclipse is far from being useful, so there is almost nothing remaining.

Michael, I'd accept your argument if there was an option to buy an enterprise edition without TogetherJ and Optimize it for, say $200. But this is not the case.

Big fan of JBuilder from version 4 (1999) through JB2006. With 2006, they finally cleaned up the annoyances in the build process. One button builds all my EJB and WAR files. Right click on EJB and pick Deploy and it's deployed. Do this in JB2007? NO, my app server is no longer supported. Borland says I can write Ant scripts to get functionality back. Huh?!? How about I just dump your $2000 piece of GARBAGE. I HATE ECLIPSE!!!!

Oh yeah, I was having trouble running updates after I first installed JB2007. In the Borland newsgroups, I was told to never run updates. Yeah okay, good luck with the new product!

Michael, you hate JBuilder and love Eclipse? You obviously do not do any development of any complexity.
