IdeaTek: a buyer’s guide

IdeaTek (IdeaTek Telcom) is a Kansas-rooted broadband provider offering rural fiber and AirLight fixed wireless — not a national cable MSO and not satellite. On RSINC it appears in about 144 cities across 2 state records. Technology labels include Fiber + Fixed Wireless (72 city listings), Fixed Wireless (69), and Fiber (3). Sample directory communities include Newton, KS, McPherson, KS, Emporia, KS, and Hutchinson, KS.

Those city counts are directory relationships, not proof every in-town address can take a drop or a radio. Compare IdeaTek with other options for your ZIP on RSINC, or call 1-877-697-2926.

History of IdeaTek — Buhler High School startup to statewide fiber fighter

IdeaTek began in 1999 when Daniel Friesen and four friends from Buhler High School started a computer-repair business with a few hundred dollars. Friesen kept the company going through college. In 2005 IdeaTek moved into telecom by buying and turning around failing dial-up and DSL operations, funding the first fiber-to-the-home builds in Buhler (2007) and then nearby towns such as Inman, Haven, Yoder, Mount Hope, and Bentley.

In 2015, IdeaTek sold a long-haul fiber-to-tower business that stretched toward Kansas City, then refocused on underserved rural communities as IdeaTek Telcom under CEO Jerrod Reimer, with Friesen as chief innovation officer — starting from roughly 1,400 internet and phone customers across eight communities. COVID-era CARES / Kansas Connectivity Emergency Response Grant awards in 2020 (about $13.7 million federal plus private match) accelerated fiber laterals and AirLight fixed-wireless infill across central and western Kansas. Company updates into 2026 cite on the order of 8,500+ miles of fiber, roughly 150 fixed-wireless towers, service in 130+ Kansas communities, hundreds of Kansas employees, and repeated Inc. 5000 appearances. HQ remains in Buhler, Kansas.

What IdeaTek offers — gigabit fiber towns + AirLight wireless

RSINC does not currently publish a full plan-and-price table on this slug. In fiber markets, expect residential gigabit-class FTTH where the plant is complete. Where fiber is not yet economical, AirLight beams service from fiber-fed towers or grain elevators to a customer antenna — company pages have marketed roughly 100–150 Mbps class wireless tiers as a bridge, with an explicit long-term goal of fiber for every Kansan. Wireless is path- and tower-specific; fiber is lateral- and drop-specific.

Recent project announcements (for example Burns, Elbing, and Whitewater fiber, plus Velocity Internet wireless acquisition coverage in Marion/Harvey/Butler counties) show the map still moving. A Hutchinson or Emporia directory label can mix city fiber with township AirLight — confirm which product your driveway qualifies for.

Who IdeaTek fits — and when to compare alternatives

IdeaTek fits central and western Kansas households in IdeaTek fiber towns or AirLight sectors who want a Kansas-owned alternative to satellite, aging DSL, or distant cable headends.

Compare alternatives when AT&T, another telco, or a co-op already offers cheaper fiber; when grain bins or shelterbelts block AirLight; or when you are outside the two-state RSINC sample entirely. IdeaTek’s mission language (“Internet Freedom”) is marketing — eligibility is still an address check.
