What an iPhone and a pretty girl have in common

posted Thursday, 11 January 2007

I've heard about iPhone from my twelve year old son shortly after Steve Jobs had announced it. My son already wants it badly for his next birthday. He's planning to save money...

The iPhone is probably the topic of the week in the blogosphere, and every blog has the same title, "O man, it's so cool, I want it now". I am a blogger too, and will join the crowd, but the title of my blog is a bit different.  If you spent this week in the rain forest, deep in the coal mine, or in Turkmenistan, where only about 300 people have access to the Internet , you may not know that iPhone is a little thingy of the size of iPod that combines the iPod, cell phone with no keys, and an Internet browser. The software runs under the OS X system.

Steve Jobs did an amazing job with  iPod and wants to pull it off again. Those people who had a chance to play with it often say "It feels amazing in your hand ".  From a practical point of view, it may not make much sense to pay $600 for an advanced iPod with only 8Gb of space, and a phone services by Cingular, but I'm sure people will be camping out for several days by the stores when THE DATE will be announced. These annoying guys from Cisco sue Apple over the iPhone name , but Steve will give them some cash to make them happy.

And the reason is simple. People like nice looking and fashionable things, regardless of if it makes practical sense or not.

I see a clear analogy between why people will buy iPhone and why men like to date and marry pretty women. She looks so beautiful, everyone turn their heads when they see us, she's blond, long legs, and she feels amazing in your hands...From the functional perspective she's not the best choice - I've already hired a housekeeper and we are ordering Chinese or pizza every other day, but who cares - when I come home from work I'll see her sitting on the couch in front of the TV in this mini skirt after visiting a beauty salon... She's smiling at me....She's ready whenever I am...And she's mine...I'm in control...I'm the man!

That's why people will go and purchase this pretty thing called iPhone. It does not matter that you'll need to take a second mortgage on the house to get it - your bank offers installments... You want it, and you want it now. Consume!

I'm an IT professional in the embedded/mobile phone market, and (it happens) a woman. I thought the comments about pretty women were, well, typical of the male IT business (ie irritating and slightly crass) but as I think that is the point you are making I'm not offended.

The iPhone kind of bugs me. I've seen better designed phones from other companies come and go - there really is nothing new in the iPhone. I think most people expect it to be a huge success - myslef included - because it's Apple, and that's what really annoys me about it. Apple deserved success with the iMac and (maybe) the iPod: these were new and smart ideas, but the iPhone? It's nothing. I'm with Cisco on this.

>I'm in control...I'm the man! You missed one more point. Some people just "must" show off. It's like "MINE IS BIGGER THAN YOURS!" thing. >You want it, and you want it now. Consume! If people wouldn't consume you (and me too) wouldn't get the paycheck, right? ;) So, it is a "good thing".

Vicky, I hear you. Trust me, I did not want to offend women. Here's a special version for women:

I see a clear analogy between why people will buy iPhone and why women like to date and marry handsome men. He looks gourgeous, people turn their heads when they see us, he's 6 feet 4, pumped up,six packs, and he feels amazing in your hands...From the functional perspective he's not the best choice - he does not read books, does not understand the difference between a burger and foies gras, he is crazy about baseball and is ready to eat this stinking Chinese or pizza every day, but who cares - when I come home from work I'll see him sitting on the couch in front of the TV in his swimming shorts with his protein cocktail in this hands after visiting gym... He's smiling at me....He's ready whenever I am...And he's mine...I'm in control...I'm the woman!

sadly, yakov lives in a world where everything is binary; in this case, it's either brawn or brain... makes the fanboy in me all warm and fuzzy ;P

Emmanuel, writing about smart blondes is boring, let's go binary - it's either 0 or 1 :)

@Vicky

As "IT professional in the embedded/mobile phone market", can you say exactly who beats sexy design from Apple? Calculator-like (RIM keyboard) smart-phones? (I'm own one, it happens ;) Stone-like Dell Axim or QTeck? Never-fit-your-pocket HP or Treo? Sony Ericson M600 (code-name "you-cannot-call-without-stylus")

Just curious...

Vicky,

I happen to be 'mobile wireless' professional as well. Looks like Jobs will eat lunch of so many that they will not know what happened to them! Ease-of-use, that is what Apple's focus has always been. Mobile devices availble in the market today are not user-friendly at all. Ease-of-use is the key; that is how you can capture the biggest chunk of the consumer market segment.

Rauf

PS: Sorry Yacov, didn't mean to turn your blog into a forum :-)

So now Chinese stinks too? Maybe you should write another version for Chinese too! Yakov, stay within the technical limits, we get you. And Valery, yup ease-of-use is the key which every other manufacturer fail to understand.

No, I'm not going to write another verson for Chinese, because it's not about Chinese people, but about Chinese food served in cheap fast food take-outs. Have to admit, that I eat Chinese once a month. There is this place Yo Hip in Midtown Manhattan. They have spare ribs in black bean sause (it's not even on the menu). I get it once in a while clearly understanding that this is a junk food. Oh well...
